5 Tips for Extending Driving Distance

Must read

Every golfer wants to be able to drive farther. Well, scratch that; every golfer wants to be able to drive farther as long as it means there is no corresponding increase in shot dispersion.

That being said, here are 5 (relatively) straightforward suggestions for hitting the ball farther.

Consider a Higher Launching Golf Shaft

If your equipment is working against you, then the straightforward thing to do is analyze what you’re playing with and upgrade it if and where necessary.

Now, we’re not suggesting you blindly re-shaft your driver. You should work with a fitter first. But what you might come away with is that you need a higher launching golf shaft.

When you can’t up your swing speed anymore, you need to hit the ball higher to get it to carry farther. The basic solution here is to swing a more flexible shaft that produces a higher launch angle so you can get that carry distance.

(Alternatively, a lighter weight golf shaft may be able to help you swing faster, but that is also something you should explore with a professional fitter rather than just guessing).

Try Swinging Faster

It might seem like a no-brainer, but speed is the key to carry distance. If you can swing faster you will hit the ball farther no matter what you are playing with.

Try swinging faster without destroying the rest of your mechanics, and focus on center contact with the club face. This should translate to greater distance, as long as you aren’t straining or struggling to swing faster.

Create a Longer Hand Arc

Creating a longer hand arc on the club grips creates a longer arc through the shaft, which in theory (and often in practice, in fact) results in a faster clubhead at the point of contact with the ball.

You can also make a bigger hip turn or bring your left heel slightly further off the ground. Either of these things should result in a longer arc, a faster clubhead speed, and greater carry distance.

Take Advantage of the Ground

While power in golf technically comes from your musculature, it’s the ground that you’re pushing off of that helps you generate leverage with that power. How you use the ground can make a huge impact on how far you hit the ball.

As you transition through your swing, push off of the ground with your heels to drive power through the club and into the ball. You should see a corresponding increase in carry distance.

Upgrade Your Golf Club Grips

One other thing you can try, if you’re confident your swing mechanics don’t need to be improved, or that you don’t want to upgrade your shaft, is to replace your golf club grips

Some golf club grips, such as Stick Grips’ swing grips, are made with an Ascension Taper that reduces tension through your trail hand, which affords you better control over the club face which can translate to higher carry distance. You can learn more on their website, but this is an affordable upgrade that you can make at home.

Put Some of These Into Practice Today

At the end of the day, you won’t get better or improve your driving distance without practice. Get to the driving range as soon as possible and try out some of these tips.
