You don’t need training to hit a can at 25 yards with a rimfire over iron sights. At least, you shouldn’t. Most people can pick that up intuitively.
Sending three rounds through the same hole at 100 yards? Even with a scoped rifle that shoots sub-MOA, that’s no joke. Not every shooter accomplishes that feat in a lifetime. Many never send two rounds through a single hole, let alone three.
With this we are straying from the realm of plinking into precision rifle shooting, which brings up the question of training.
With rifles (and ammo) as expensive as they are, is precision rifle training worth it as another line item?
Well, maybe, but it can definitely help, and it most certainly can shorten the learning curve associated with shooting accurately, while more than likely teaching you a thing or two that you just didn’t know.
Here are some reasons investing in precision rifle training can be an excellent idea.
- It can teach you to calculate ballistics. Each cartridge, based on load data, as well as your rifle’s barrel length, will perform differently. The good news is, holding those variables constant, you can calculate what that performance will be. Precision rifle training will assist with those essential ballistic calculations.
- You’ll learn to read wind and drop. Bullet drop is fairly consistent given muzzle velocity, ballistic coefficient, and range. But wind is more dynamic. Precision rifle training can teach you to identify wind and calculate its speed and effect on the bullet so that you can calculate wind drift.
- You’ll learn about trigger control. Trigger control is one of the most important elements of shooting accurately. Believe it or not, how your finger contacts the trigger and the forces you impart to the gun, whether consciously or subconsciously, can have a massive impact on accuracy downrange, especially once you get past 100 yards.
- You’ll learn about breathing discipline. Every shooting coach might offer different advice, but everyone agrees that breathing discipline is important, not just in extreme long-range rifle shooting but also with precision rifle shooting.
- Learn to shoot from uncomfortable and unconventional positions. Another potentially great element of precision rifle shooting is that it will coach you on shooting through unfamiliar and even uncomfortable positions; and once you learn to shoot confidently and accurately from those off-positions, you’ll be much more confident with what you’re familiar with.
- You’ll build foundational, transferrable skills. These mentioned, and other skills, will serve as a foundation on which you can build as you pursue the shooting sports, whether you expand from precision rifle shooting to ELR shooting, and whether you keep it as a hobby or decide to compete.
